Synopsis
Just as fighters are shaped by trading blows in the ring, a person can only be polished through meeting and colliding with others. BRUTING follows one boxer's path, watching how victory and defeat, glory and failure all cut and shape the rough stone that he is. Opponents, allies, and the walls that stand in his way each become another diamond that grinds against him. The more his ego is worn down and the excess is stripped away, the closer he comes to the brilliance he was always meant to hold. This is a record of a painful polishing — a story of a person shaped by other people.
Director's Statement
A diamond can only be cut by another diamond of equal hardness. Making this film, I became convinced the same is true of people. As I kept the camera close to him, I found myself drawn less to winning and losing than to who he met, what he collided with, and what he let go of each time. It is in that process — of being ground down, polished, and stripped of the unnecessary — that a person's true form appears. Rather than dramatize it, I wanted to hand that quiet act of polishing to the audience as it was.
